CELEBRATION, Fla., July 13, 2012- An internationally renowned central Florida surgeon was inducted as a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) recently.

Dr. Vipul Patel, director of the Global Robotics Institute and Director of Urology Oncology at Florida Hospital Celebration Health, is now an honorary member of the RAS. The RAS is a national academy of Russia that includes a network of scientific institutes throughout the Russian federation. Becoming an honorary member as an American means his work has received recognition from the global scientific community.

Dr. Patel and his work have been attributed to changing the landscape of prostate cancer care. A few of the many accomplishments he has achieved in the field include; publishing sentinel papers on the management and outcome of prostate cancer, founding the Society of Robotic Surgeons and creating a non-profit called International Prostate Cancer Foundation. He has also completed over 5,500 robotic prostatectomies (removal of the prostate). In 2008, Dr. Patel and his team formed and trained the Russian robotic surgery team, performing the first robotic prostatectomy in Russia.

“We are honored to have such an exemplary physician as part of our team,” said Dr. Monica Reed, Administrator of Florida Hospital Celebration Health, “Dr. Patel has been a valuable example to all of us and has continued to inspire us with his dedication to the field. Central Floridians are so fortunate to have such a skilled surgeon in this community.”

His emphasis on education and research has helped make Dr. Patel one of the honorary members of the RAS, which has inducted Nobel Prize laureates such as Ivan Pavlov, famous for his experiments on the physiology of digestion and conditioning dogs, and James Watson, awarded for discoveries on nucleic acids. Benjamin Franklin was also the first American to be inducted into RAS.

The RAS was founded by Peter the Great and is built up of eleven specialized scientific branches. Its main goal is to conduct researched focused on gaining new knowledge about the laws of nature, society, human rights and contributing to many aspects of the development of Russian. It was founded in 1724 and continues to add prominent figures such as Dr. Patel to its membership.
