Volunteer Programs
We are stronger together — it’s true in life and with our volunteer program at AdventHealth Ottawa, too. Our Auxiliary is one of the most active and well-organized hospital Auxiliaries in the state of Kansas. They have dedicated themselves to serving our community, staff and providers and helping others on their journey to whole health.
Join us as a student, adult, business or associate member and let’s embark on one of many volunteer opportunities together.
Our adult volunteer program is for men and women ages 19 and older. Weekday, evening and weekend opportunities are available, depending on your areas of interest.
Student Volunteers
Our student volunteer program is available for students ages 14 through 18.
Our summer student volunteer program runs June through August. Applications for the summer program are due by May 1st.
Associate and Business Memberships
We understand that life gets busy and you’re not always able to commit your time to support causes you hold dear to your heart. We offer associate and business volunteer membership if you’re unable to be a volunteer at the hospital, but still want to be part of our organization.
A health care career isn’t just a job. It’s a calling. If your future includes helping others feel their best, then consider applying for the AdventHealth Ottawa Auxiliary Scholarship.
This scholarship is designed to encourage and support Franklin County residents to pursue health care education and training, so that they can ultimately support families, friends and everyone in the community.

Even the most seasoned volunteers have questions. Frequently asked questions we receive include:
What should I do if I can’t work my scheduled shift?
Try to give the Volunteer Department as much notice as possible. If you are required to find your own substitute, contact someone on the list that we provide. Let us know you will not be coming to your shift and who your substitute will be. This helps us keep track of who is responsible for the duties of the position for that day and time.
What if I need to change my shift time, day or location?
If you need to change your shift time, day or location, please contact the Volunteer Department at Call785-229-8231. We are happy to discuss options with you.
What do I do if I am having problems with my supervisor or my coworker?
If you are having problems with anyone in the hospital, please alert the Volunteer Department staff immediately. If you feel threatened or unsafe, contact security.
Dealing With Burnout
Burnout can happen to anyone, but it’s more common in high-stress, high-energy settings like hospitals. Burnout doesn’t happen overnight, and you can’t always pinpoint the cause, but you can prevent it.
To help prevent burnout, you can:
Exercise to reduce stress
Mentally remove yourself from your job
Pay attention to your body
Reduce long work hours
Set realistic goals
Start your day slowly
Take a break from your routine
Use relaxation skills
