Urgent Care or ER: How to identify an emergency
Surprised, worried, unsure where to go and what to do? When you're caught off guard and time is of the essence, it’s natural to feel shaken and uncertain. We are here to help.

Did severe pain come out of nowhere? Has your health or the health of someone you love taken a sharp turn for the worse? If you feel a condition is life threatening or could lead to disability, trust your gut and go to the closest emergency room or call 911 for an ambulance right away. Typical emergency situations that require a trip to the nearest emergency room include:

• Complicated Fractures
• Deep Wounds
• Extreme Difficulty Breathing
• Major Head Injury
• Poisoning
• Severe Allergic Reactions

What to expect when you visit the ER
We know that when you get to your closest ER, you'll have lots of questions. Our compassionate and experienced emergency room team is here to answer each one thoughtfully and patiently. We’ll have questions, too. Because the more we know, the better and quicker our ER specialists can treat you. We start with the basics — name, birth date, medical history, and reason for your visit. We also take your vital signs. From there, we will determine how best to proceed.

Through a process known as triage, careful prioritization can make all the difference for patients in critical condition. Sometimes, this means earlier treatment for a later-arriving patient. We strive to make ER wait times as short as possible, so that you can find ease from your stress and pain. We might see a person suffering from a suspected heart attack or stroke as soon as they get here so they can get the speedy specialized care they need. When every minute counts, you can count on us. Our emergency rooms are equipped with the latest medical technology.

To help keep your stress levels low and expedite treatment, you may want to consider keeping an information card in your handbag or wallet at all times. Include the name and number of your primary care physician, a list of your medications, drug allergies, and any advanced directives, like powers of attorney or health care proxy.

For illnesses and injuries that are painful, but less urgent, such as minor injuries, strep throat, or ear infections, AdventHealth's many local urgent care centers are ready to treat you and get you back on your feet. Wherever you go, our network is equipped with compassionate, world-class specialists administering advanced clinical care with one goal in mind: to quickly bring you relief and help you feel whole again.

In that spirit, we also offer flu shots, on-site lab services, EKGs, x-rays, and annual physical exams.
